UV disinfection - Aquaculture

Using UV disinfection instead of harmful chemicals is a safer and more sustainable way to eliminate pathogens and protect public health.

To preserve the aquatic environment from overfishing, aquaculture has rapidly developed over the last years, becoming an important industrial section. To keep the bacterial load in fish farms to a low level, UV disinfection is needed. When turbidity is increased, ozonation prior to UV radiation is highly recommended. Ozonation in fish farming facilities is beneficial as the oxygen concentration is enhanced when ozone reverts to oxygen.

The treatment with UV and/or ozone is widely used as the physical characteristics of the treated water are not affected so water disinfection occurs without undesirable side effects e.g. toxic byproducts, pH changes or temperature fluctuations. Thus, the improved water quality, will possibly increase stock density and significantly reduce the risk of disease. Aquacultures are located in remote facilities where energy consumption is critical, and therefore amalgam lamps are usually used.

UV disinfection - Drinking Water

Our UV disinfection services have a minimal impact on the environment and a maximum positive impact on public health. We are committed to providing safe and sustainable solutions for all.

Access to safe drinking water is an undeniable human right. According to the current European legislation, the use of UV for disinfection of potable water is an important part of the treatment.

Unlike chlorine, UV doesn’t enhance harmful disinfection by-products, it doesn’t affect the taste or odor of the water. Additionally, it ensures pathogen-free water since it is able to deactivate chlorine-reluctant pathogens such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Ozonation is also widely applied in potable water treatment due to its numerous benefits against traditional disinfection alternatives.

 Aquariums

With the current global health crisis, the need for effective disinfection services has never been more critical. Our UV disinfection services provide a solution to this pressing issue.

The past decades, the aquatic environment has gained our attention. Aquariums and amusement parks attract many people and therefore the insurance of a desired water quality has become a challenge for water quality operators.

Since the complete replacement of such a large volume of water with clean from the distribution system is not economically feasible, the water recirculation has become a necessity and consequently its disinfection. Water quality parameters should be within a specific range in order to achieve crystal clear disinfected water, free from microrganisms and chlorine disinfection by-products. Disinfection alternatives such as UV light and ozone are widely used in both aquariums and amusement parks.

Swimming Pools

Pools - Chlorinated disinfection by-products (DBPs) in swimming pools are a known health concern, being suspicious for causing allergies, respiratory infections, and some forms of cancer.

An excellent way to reduce DBPs in swimming pools is the use of UV light and especially medium pressure lamp or the addition of ozone.

Swimming pool UV systems deactivate bacteria, viruses, molds, and their spores drastically, reducing the risk of infection to bathers. In addition, UV systems destroy chloramines, the compounds responsible for the unpleasant smell in pools. UV disinfection becomes an essential element for maintaining the desired water quality in the interaction with chemical and mechanical treatment of water

Wastewater

Wastewater -  UV disinfection is widely popular for wastewater treatment due to the fact that, unlike chlorine, it oesn't increase effluent toxicity while microorganisms, being present in the outflow of clarification plants are deactivated and the carbon based compounds are removed. Furthermore, ozonation has found to remove efficiently pharmaceutical compounds from hospital waste waters. With the help of our UV systems and Gaia Ozone systems, water remains safe to be discharged to aquatic environment.

The industry consumes significant volumes of water. Thus, water reuse is highly important in both economic and ecological aspects.

Our water treatment technologies eliminate unwanted chemicals from the water stream, removing pathogens and producing a safe, non-toxic effluent.

The reused water is usually used for irrigation; therefore, the water should fulfill the limits set by legislation. Depending on the chemical and biological load of the water, suitable solutions will be given to achieve the desired disinfection.

Why UV?

Chlorination

  • Chlorine disinfection requires active operation and attention
  • Chlorine is an additive material and creates an unhealthy byproduct
  • Chlorine adds an unpleasant odor and taste to treated water

UV

  • UV disinfection is very low maintenance and only requires an annual bulb change
  • Ultraviolet does not add any odor or smell to treated water
  • UV does not add anything to the water and does not have any byproduct
  • Pathogens inactivation up to 99.99%
  • Chemical-free disinfection
  • Does not change water taste and odor
  • Crystal clear water
  • Economically robust
